Sulphur Ranger District Update- 7/1/2008

Here are the latest updates as of June 30, 2008 for the Sulphur Ranger
District's Battle with the Bark Beetle.
For more information, maps, and other downloads, please go to:

Current Road Situation:

Many Forest Roads Damaged or Still Covered in Snow: Due to the large
amount of snow re received during the winter, many sections of the
District's major roads have been partially or entirley washed out. Other
sections of road are still entirely covered in snow and still not drivable
by cars, 4-wheel drive trucks, or other similar vehicles. We are working
very hard to repair damaged sections of roads and clear out snow drifts.
Many dispersed camping or other general forest areas can not be accessed
because of these situations. These roads will remain gated until they are
safely negotiable by vehicles. Some of the more major roads and their
associated problems are listed below.
Keyser Creek and Keyser Ridge Roads (NFSR 139 and 140) have experienced
a major wash-out at their intersection. Road repair crews are currently
trying to fix this situation.
Beaver Creek and Crooked Creek Roads (NFSR 133 and 139, also known as
County Road 50) have experienced extensive road damage due to increased
snow-melt. These roads are being worked on right now and will be opened
as soon as possible.
Kawuneeche and Stillwater Pass Roads (NFSR 120 and 123, also known as
County Road 4) are snowed in at their higher elevations.
Rollins Pass Road (NFSR 149, also known as County Road 80) is snowed in above the railroad trestle. Road crews are currently working to clear
this snow off of the road.

Projects in the Grand Lake Area:

Campground Hazard Tree Reduction Project:
We are currently working very hard to remove hazardous trees in campgrounds
and other developed areas. Many areas have already been cleared at this
point. Campgrounds and picnic areas may look considerably more open this
year due to tree removal. Point Park Picnic Area in Grand Lake will be
closed this week due to hazard tree removal. Our goal is to have the Point
Park Picnic Area open by Friday, the 4th of July.

Arapaho National Recreation Area Vegetation Management Project:
Logging has resumed near the Idleglen Parking Area. The Spruce-Em-Up-Jack Trail is temporairly closed until the tree removal work can be completed in the units adajcent to the trail. Please follow all posted travel
regulation signs. A new map has been posted on the website.

Green Ridge Good Neighbor Project:
This project was completed earlier this month. The goal of this project
was to remove fuels along the private land boundary near County Roads 64
and 66. This project was a joint effort between the U.S. Forest Service
and the Colorado State Forest Service. We appreciate the public's support
and look forward to completing more cooperative projects like this in the
future. A new map has been posted on the website.

Projects in the Fraser and Winter Park Area:

Upper Fraser Vegetation Management Projects 1 and 2:
Logging is expected to resume in the areas of the Fraser Experimental
Forest, Vasquez Creek, and Elk Creek in mid- to late-July.

Tabernash:
Logging has resumed in the area south of the Meadow Creek Reservoir Road.
No trail or road closures are expected however, the public needs to be
cautious on the Meadow Creek Reservoir Road due to heavy truck traffic.
